KNEX Design and Technology Workshop

Overview:

Children are provided with an introduction to the exciting world of engineering by inviting them to produce a design solution for a given problem, and then build it using K’Nex!  Children will work in pairs wherever possible.

Timetabling

The in school session will run for half a day with the pupils working in pairs on the design and construction of an engineering problem. The exact timing is flexible enough to fit around most break and lunchtime commitments.  The challenge children will be set is determined prior to the start of the session.  STEMworks will work closely with teaching staff to develop a challenge that ties in closely with the chosen topic. During the planning of the session teachers will have the opportunity to discuss the needs of the children and can use this session either as an introduction/conclusion to a larger area of study, or as a stand alone short unit.

A typical session will last for about 3 hours in total and will start with a short talk about the importance of strength and structures.  Children will then be given approximately 1 1/2  hours to design and build a working solution to the problem. The students will show their ideas and give a short presentation about their work.

K’Nex is a very adaptable construction kit that will allow the pupils to experiment with structures, gears and other mechanisms while modelling their design.

Teams will be assessed on their ability to work together, solve problems, produce a working model and communicate their ideas. All pupils will have the opportunity to evaluate their own as well as their peers work.

How and Where

A member of the STEMworks team will run the session in school and will bring enough K’Nex kits for each pair of children.

How to book

Booking a session is easy, simply complete an enquiry form.  A member of our team will then contact you to have an initial discussion and arrange a suitable date/time.
