Structures Workshop

The iconic domes of The Eden Project have become a well talked about feature of the modern landscape.  Their hexagonal components hold numerous architectural and geometric features.

During this workshop students will be given an introduction to civil engineering.  Groups of between 4-6 pupils will then be challenged to explore the properties of different shapes and encouraged to experiment with different construction arrangements.  Pupils will explore the properties of shapes and how tessellations are made.  By the end of the day pupils will build scale models of different types of structures, including towers, bridges, towers and geodesic domes.  The workshop could be used in conjunction with other subject areas, including DT, Science, Maths and Geography.

The large impressive dome structures will be made from paper tubes joined together with nuts and bolts. The Domes will be big enough for each of the teams to get inside.  In order for teams to produce a successful structure pupils will need to work well together, each person having a defined role in the production process.  The success of each team will be dependant on their understanding of shape, as well as being able to work effectively as part of a team.

The workshop will be delivered in your school by one of the STEMworks team who will bring along all the equipment and materials needed. Due to the nature of this workshop, it will be essential to have a large area available for the production and construction of the domes. If it is intended to run the project outdoors it will of course be dependant on the weather at the time.

If you are interested in running this workshop please either complete an enquiry form, or contact STEMworks 01452 865028.  We will be happy to discuss suitable dates and times etc with you.
