Teaching mathematics when I'm not too sure about it myself – a course for the non specialist maths teacher

6 March, 2012

Who is this training for?

This course is designed for teachers in both Key Stage 1 and 2 to provide them with the essential subject knowledge and the confidence to tackle those hard to teach / hard to learn aspects of mathematics.

During this course, we will

  • improve our subject knowledge of the mathematics curriculum including – calculation, fractions, decimals, percentages and shape
  • consider and develop effective approaches for teaching and learning to ensure that mathematics is taught well and better understood including how we use talk, practical equipment, recording and problem solving to do so
  • experience the progression in these key areas to realise the importance of getting the teaching and learning right from the first time children are introduced to them
  • have a greater understanding of the errors and misconceptions that children acquire including their coping strategies

Teachers will leave the day not only feeling more confident in their own mathematical knowledge but also in their ability to teach mathematical concepts so that children have a better understanding as a result of knowing what errors and misconceptions children frequently make.
