Suitable for: KS3
Student number: up to 33
Workshop length: 1 hour to half day
This workshops involves programming a LEGO robot to move around a maze and can last from one hour to half a day. It provides students with a fun and engaging activity in which to deploy their geometry and measurement skills.
Students control the robot by programming the number of degrees the wheels turn. With the aid of only a ruler, students must calculate the distances the robot needs to move and determine the corresponding number of degrees the wheels must rotate. To turn the robot around the maze corners, the students will need to employ even more circle geometry to ensure the robot stays on course and reaches the end of the maze.
The workshop helps build team working and communication skills and requires students to employ mathematical fluency.
