Companies which will be required to recruit a significant number of STEM professionals as part of a large engineering project may consider laying foundations early. EDF Energy have worked with STEMworks over several years to ensure that young local people enter the recruitment pipeline in preparation for the construction of Hinkley Point C, Somerset.
STEMworks has delivered workshops in secondary schools tracing the cohort most likely to benefit from the training and employment associated with the project.
Furthermore, STEMworks has delivered a student residential programme which accompanies the school workshop project. The residential provides an opportunity for apprentices from EDF to take a leadership role, gain confidence and improve their soft skills. The week long programme includes a visit to the HPC construction site, use of Cannington Court, a historic building which has been reincarnated as an education and training facility for EDF Energy employees, a high ropes course and formal dinner. The programme revolves around multiple STEM activities and the graduate led Energy Island project. more information can be found here.
