Suitable for: KS2 and KS3
Student number: up to 60
Workshop length: 1 hour to half day
In this classic workshop students must bolt together rolled paper to build the strongest and longest bridge possible. Students must employ teamwork, communication, design and construction skills to build their bridges. A consideration of shape, tessellation and structure is important, with pupils perhaps picking up inspiration from local bridges. Longer sessions may also ask students to consider the economics of their designs and provide a presentation.
Students must also understand materials and consider how they respond to various forces. How will they harness the tensile strength of string? How can they improve the weakness of paper in compression? Will they construct composite materials to gain advantage?
This workshop can be adapted to last from 60 minutes to a half day with all materials provided.
