Primary Workshops

Cipher Challenge

Suitable for: Years 6 – 10
Student number: up to 36
Workshop length: half or full day

Are you looking for a fun and engaging way to introduce your students to the world of engineering, mathematics, computer science, and science? Look no further than our exciting workshop that immerses students in a hypothetical enemy territory, where they must transmit a message across a river using limited resources and a communications tower taller than the surrounding trees.

Through this challenge, students will develop their problem-solving skills and learn about the contributions of past and present scientists, mathematicians, and engineers, from Bletchley Park to GCHQ. They will use their mathematical abilities to design a coding system that will transmit their message and build a communications tower to complete their mission.

Our workshop provides a unique opportunity for students to apply their knowledge of maths, science (physics), and D&T in a fun and interactive way. STEMworks will provide all of the necessary materials, and the workshop can be conducted in a classroom, making it an easily accessible and convenient experience for teachers and students alike. Don't miss this exciting chance to engage your students and spark their interest in STEM fields!
