Suitable for: Year 8 – 3½- 4 hour session
Suitable for: Year 9 – 2 x 2 hour sessions
STEM workshops – Schools can choose Year 8 and/or Year 9 workshops (subject to availability)
STEM subjects obviously play a big part in the work we do and these practical hands-on sessions really bring that work to life and link to the curriculum.
Year 8 As their first taste of what HPC has to offer, students hear about what it’s like to work on the construction of a large nuclear power station. They will have the chance to hear from and speak to those involved in this exciting project before moving on to complete a ‘design and make’ challenge. Working in teams and using their STEM skills, students will design, test and modify their ideas before presenting their final solution. This workshop can cater for 60 students, we bring all the equipment and resources, (a large hall would be required to deliver this workshop). This activity supports Gatsby Benchmarks 2, 4 and 5.
Year 9 Students will have an opportunity hear more about STEM Careers from STEM volunteers. This will assist them when making decisions about whether to become an apprentice or graduate in a STEM discipline. We discuss how electricity is generated and discuss the need to use more low carbon methods, groups will make their own wind generators. We can work with up to 45 students per 2 hour session and will run two sessions per day. We bring all the equipment and resources, (with smaller groups this could be run in a large classroom). This activity supports Gatsby Benchmarks 2 , 4 and 5.
Places are offered on a first come first served basis. THESE WORKSHOP ARES ONLY AVAILABLE FOR SCHOOLS LOCAL TO HPC.
